Pivotal’s CEO Transition and Progress in Electric VTOL Development

The CEO of Pivotal, a flying car company backed by Larry Page, has left the company after more than four years in the role. Ken Karklin, who led Pivotal’s efforts in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology, announced his departure, stating he is pursuing new endeavors. Karklin emphasized the company’s progress in moving beyond prototypes to real-world applications of advanced air mobility. His interim replacement is Mike Ross, an aviation executive and board member, who expressed confidence in Pivotal’s safety and engineering approach. Pivotal has made strides with its Helix aircraft, a lightweight electric personal aircraft sold since 2024, and its BlackFly model, which recently aided in an emergency response in North Carolina. The company is part of the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, highlighting its role in advancing urban air mobility. Despite Karklin’s exit, Pivotal remains focused on its roadmap, including the development of a fourth-generation Helix aircraft. The transition underscores the challenges and growth of the eVTOL industry, which faces regulatory and operational hurdles as it moves toward commercial viability.
