Banking app glitch briefly exposed other customers’ transactions
Customers of Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland experienced a major privacy glitch when their banking apps mistakenly displayed the transactions of other users. The issue, which occurred on Thursday morning, allowed some customers to view payments, charges, and even National Insurance numbers belonging to other account holders. One Halifax customer reported seeing transactions exceeding £1 million, while others noticed salaries, benefits payments, and direct debits, including car registration numbers linked to DVLA payments. The affected individuals expressed panic and concern for their personal security, with one user describing the experience as ‘almost traumatising.’ Lloyds Banking Group, which owns all three banks, confirmed the problem had been resolved and pledged to investigate further. The Information Commissioner’s Office and the Financial Conduct Authority have been notified and are reviewing the incident. The banks emphasised that no customer accounts were accessed improperly and that they are taking steps to ensure such errors do not recur. This incident follows prior technical problems with the apps during payday periods in early 2025, although those issues only affected customers’ own accounts rather than exposing others’ financial information.
