Substack introduces a desktop studio for pre-recorded video content
Substack, the publishing platform known primarily for newsletters, is expanding its support for video content with the launch of the Substack Recording Studio. This new desktop-only feature allows creators to pre-record videos, either solo or with up to two guests, and includes options such as custom watermarks and screen sharing. The platform automatically generates clips and thumbnails after recordings, streamlining a process that previously required multiple tools. According to Substack, creators who have used audio or video in the last 90 days see 50% faster revenue growth compared to those who have not. This move aligns with Substack’s broader strategy to position itself as a multimedia platform similar to Patreon, encouraging creators to diversify their content formats. Since 2022, Substack has permitted video uploads, followed by livestreaming and monetization options last year, along with a $20 million Creator Accelerator Fund to support migration from other platforms. Additionally, Substack recently launched a TV app for Apple TV and Google TV, featuring a TikTok-style recommendation row to promote video posts and livestreams. The shift highlights the growing trend of viewers consuming longer-form content on television, as seen with Netflix and YouTube’s significant investments in video podcasts for living room devices.
