Meta Introduces Avatar Quests to Increase Engagement in VR Platforms
Meta has launched a new feature called ‘Avatar Quests’ aimed at enhancing user engagement with its VR platforms, particularly through Facebook and Instagram. This feature allows users to earn experience points (XP) by completing various tasks in VR games such as ‘Kaiju City Showdown’ and ‘Super Rumble Rocket Ruckus’. These XP points are linked to users’ avatars, promoting competition and social interaction among users. This gamification approach is designed to build more consistent interest in Meta’s VR offerings. Despite scaling back public references to the ‘metaverse’ following past criticism, Meta continues to pursue this vision, now integrating AI as a key enabler. The company believes AI will simplify VR content creation by allowing users to generate immersive worlds through simple text prompts. For example, its Horizon Worlds editor now supports AI-generated VR objects, making creative tools more accessible. Meta is also developing AR glasses to further immerse users in digital experiences. By encouraging avatar-based interaction—already popular among younger audiences in platforms like Roblox and Fortnite—Meta aims to establish a digital ecosystem that blends AI, VR, and social engagement. This initiative represents a gradual but strategic move toward realizing its metaverse ambitions.
