Microsoft Introduces 60-Day Expiry for System Restore Points in Windows 11

Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 update (KB5060842), part of the June 2025 security patch, introduces a new rule for how System Restore points are handled. Beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2, restore points will be retained for no longer than 60 days. After this period, older restore points will be deleted automatically. This change ensures consistency in the management of restore points, which previously had varied expiry times ranging from 10 to 90 days, depending on the system’s settings and available space. While the update does not alter the creation or usage of restore points, it establishes a firm time limit for their storage. If disk space becomes full, older restore points will still be deleted to free up space, but now the 60-day rule will take precedence over any available storage. Some users have expressed frustration with this limit, questioning why the system cannot allow for indefinite storage or at least give users more control. However, Microsoft seems to be focused on streamlining system restore functionality to maintain efficiency. While the change doesn’t fundamentally alter how system restore works, it gives users clearer expectations about the lifespan of their restore points.
