NIST and CU Boulder Develop True Random Number Generator Using Quantum Entanglement
Scientists from NIST and the University of Colorado Boulder have developed a cutting-edge quantum randomness beacon known as CURBy, which produces true random numbers based on the unpredictable nature of quantum entanglement. Unlike traditional pseudo-random number generators, CURBy utilizes quantum physics principles to ensure randomness that is verifiable, traceable, and transparent. This new technology has vast potential applications, from enhancing cybersecurity to ensuring fairness in public lotteries. The system operates by measuring pairs of entangled photons, whose outcomes are inherently random, ensuring that the numbers generated are impossible to predict or manipulate. By using a novel set of protocols called the Twine protocol, CURBy enables anyone to verify the generated numbers, ensuring the integrity of the process. The project is open source, inviting contributions from around the world to further improve or build upon this quantum-based randomness beacon. This breakthrough offers a quantum advantage in randomness generation, with the added benefit of transparency and security that could be applied in fields such as auditing, resource allocation, and more.
