Mozilla to Discontinue Pocket and Fakespot Services by October 2025

Mozilla has announced it will discontinue its read-it-later service, Pocket, on July 8, 2025. Users will still be able to access the app and its browser extensions until that date, after which Pocket will enter an export-only mode. Saved items—including lists, archives, favorites, notes, and highlights—can be exported until October 8. Pocket, acquired by Mozilla in 2017, gained popularity for allowing users to save online content for later reading. Despite its loyal userbase, Mozilla is choosing to refocus on projects better aligned with evolving web usage patterns. The company says it will continue investing in high-quality content discovery through features such as its New Tab experience and email newsletters.

In addition to Pocket, Mozilla is also shutting down Fakespot, a browser extension designed to identify fake product reviews. According to Mozilla, although the concept of Fakespot was well-received, it was not sustainable within its current model. Mozilla’s broader strategy involves enhancing its Firefox browser with new tools like vertical tabs, smart search, and AI-powered features, while maintaining independence in the web ecosystem. The announcement has sparked disappointment among Pocket users, many of whom have expressed frustration on social media.
