Elon Musk Announces Immediate Retirement of SpaceX Dragon After Trump Threatens Government Contracts

Elon Musk announced that SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately, following threats from President Donald Trump to cancel government contracts with Musk’s companies. The announcement, made via Musk’s social media platform X, marks a significant escalation in tensions between Musk and Trump, which began after Musk publicly criticized a major tax bill promoted by the president. The Dragon spacecraft is currently the only U.S. vehicle capable of transporting crew to and from the International Space Station (ISS). Earlier this year, a Dragon capsule successfully returned two NASA astronauts to Earth after they were stranded on the ISS due to issues with Boeing’s Starliner capsule. Since 2008, SpaceX has received over $20 billion in federal contracts from NASA, the Air Force, and other agencies, making it one of the largest government contractors. The Dragon is notable for being the only operational spacecraft able to return significant cargo to Earth and was the first private vehicle to carry humans to the ISS. SpaceX had previously planned to continue using Dragon for another six to eight years, according to company president Gwynne Shotwell, while also developing the next-generation Starship rocket, which is still in the testing phase. Musk’s decision to retire Dragon comes at a critical time for U.S. space operations, given its unique role in crewed missions and cargo returns.
