Walmart and Wing Expand Drone Delivery to 100 Stores in Five U.S. Cities

Walmart, in partnership with Alphabet’s drone company Wing, is significantly expanding its drone delivery service. After nearly two years of operations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the service will now be introduced in 100 additional stores across five new U.S. cities: Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa. This expansion aims to bring 30-minute or faster deliveries to millions of homes, potentially creating the largest drone delivery network in the country.

Wing drones, capable of carrying up to 5-pound packages, have already demonstrated high efficiency in Dallas, handling around 1,000 orders daily from 18 stores. Common deliveries include essentials like baby wipes, eggs, and forgotten groceries. In the new locations, deliveries will initially be available through Wing’s app, offering free delivery on a limited selection of store-priced items.

The rollout will test both consumer interest in ultra-fast deliveries and the public’s acceptance of drones sharing residential airspace. Regulatory, logistical, and economic hurdles remain, with experts questioning the commercial viability of drone deliveries at scale. Nonetheless, Walmart and Wing remain optimistic, especially in temperate regions where drones perform best. The Federal Aviation Administration has authorized up to 30,000 daily deliveries in Dallas and 10,000 in Charlotte, indicating strong institutional support for the initiative.
