Near Space Labs raises $20M to expand its stratosphere-based high-resolution imaging technology
Near Space Labs, a startup focused on using helium balloon-powered aircraft to capture high-resolution imagery from the stratosphere, has raised $20 million in a Series B round to accelerate its growth. The company, founded by former space and physics researchers, provides imagery that serves industries like insurance, agriculture, and potentially others. Their Swift robots, which rely on wind currents for propulsion, can quickly cover large areas with 7cm resolution images. This new funding will help scale operations, especially to cover more areas of the U.S. and refine its services for insurance companies, who use the images to track disasters like fires and hurricanes. Although the company has not yet pursued military applications, the potential for low-cost, high-quality aerial imagery in various sectors, including AI, is attracting significant investor interest. Near Space is positioning itself as an alternative to drones and satellites, with plans to offer tailored coverage plans to meet the specific needs of its customers.
