Netflix adopts generative AI for visual effects in original series to reduce production costs
Netflix has employed generative artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time to create visual effects in one of its original TV shows, the Argentine science fiction series The Eternauts. According to co-CEO Ted Sarandos, this technology enabled the production team to generate a complex scene of a building collapsing in Buenos Aires ten times faster than traditional visual effects methods, making it feasible on a relatively modest budget. This marks the debut use of finalized AI-generated footage in a Netflix original film or series. The move aligns with Netflix’s broader strategy to improve efficiency and scale quality content production, as reflected in its recent financial results showing a 16% revenue increase to $11 billion and profit growth to $3.1 billion. However, the use of generative AI remains controversial in the entertainment industry due to concerns over its potential to repurpose creative work without consent and threaten human jobs, a key issue raised during the 2023 Hollywood strike. Sarandos emphasized that AI serves to enhance creativity and democratize access to cutting-edge effects, especially for productions with limited budgets. Netflix is also exploring AI applications beyond visual effects, such as personalized content search and advertising. This initiative illustrates both the opportunities and ethical tensions posed by integrating AI into filmmaking and series production.
