Dutch Government Intervenes at Chinese-Owned Nexperia Over Economic Security Concerns

The Dutch government has made a rare intervention in Chinese-owned semiconductor firm Nexperia due to concerns over risks to Dutch and European economic security. Invoking the Goods Availability Act, the Netherlands aims to prevent a disruption in chip supply that could affect critical technological capabilities on European soil. Nexperia, owned by China-listed Wingtech, has faced scrutiny after previously being forced to sell its Newport, Wales plant over national security concerns. The Dutch intervention highlights ongoing tensions between the EU and China amid broader geopolitical and trade challenges. Wingtech’s shares fell 10% following the announcement, and the company is already on the US ‘entity list’ restricting access to American technology exports. The Dutch government did not specify exact risks but emphasized the need to safeguard technological knowledge and supply continuity. Nexperia’s production is allowed to continue normally for now.
