Google Updates NotebookLM with Experimental Gemini 2.5 Flash Model

Google has updated its AI-powered tool, NotebookLM, to use the new Gemini 2.5 Flash model, replacing the previously integrated 2.0 Flash version. This upgrade, announced in early May 2025, is expected to enhance NotebookLM’s ability to handle complex and multi-step reasoning questions. The Gemini 2.5 Flash model features advanced thinking capabilities, and Google notes that it should enable the platform to provide more comprehensive and insightful responses. This shift also supports the rollout of new features like Audio Overviews, which are now available in over 50 languages, thanks to Gemini’s native audio support.

Currently labeled as experimental, Gemini 2.5 Flash is available within the Gemini app with full capabilities. Once this model reaches a stable state, it is likely to fully replace the 2.0 Flash version, and may lead to the removal of free access to Gemini 2.5 Pro. Additionally, for developers, a preview version of Gemini 2.5 Flash (version gemini-2.5-flash-preview-04-17) is accessible for testing ahead of its full production release. Google has promised further improvements before the model becomes generally available.

These developments are part of Google’s broader push to make Gemini a more proactive and personalized assistant, reflecting its ambition to redefine how users interact with AI across platforms.
