Nvidia Opposes Anthropic’s Backing of U.S. AI Chip Export Regulations
Nvidia has publicly disagreed with Anthropic over the latter’s endorsement of upcoming U.S. government regulations that will restrict the export of AI chips. These controls, set to begin on May 15, are part of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s “Framework for Artificial Intelligence Diffusion.” Anthropic reaffirmed its support for these restrictions, citing concerns about chips being illicitly transported into countries like China. The company provided colorful descriptions of alleged smuggling methods, including hiding chips in ‘baby bumps’ or alongside live seafood.
In response, Nvidia criticized these claims, suggesting they are exaggerated and deflect from the real issue. The chipmaker emphasized the importance of innovation over fear-driven regulation and warned that these controls would negatively affect its global operations. The company has already projected a potential revenue loss of $5.5 billion in the first quarter of its 2026 fiscal year due to the new licensing requirements for selling its H20 AI chips in China.
This exchange highlights the growing divide within the U.S. tech industry regarding the balance between national security concerns and economic competitiveness in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
