OpenAI Reaffirms Non-Profit Governance After Scrapping Control Shift Plans

OpenAI has reversed a controversial decision to transfer governance of the organization from its non-profit entity to a for-profit arm, following significant backlash from public figures, including Elon Musk, civic leaders, and attorney generals. The company was originally founded as a non-profit, and although it created a for-profit subsidiary to raise funds for AI development, the core governance remained with the non-profit body. In 2024, OpenAI proposed shifting control to the for-profit arm, sparking concerns about the integrity of its mission to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity. Critics feared the move would give CEO Sam Altman excessive power and compromise the company’s original ideals. Following pressure, OpenAI chairman Bret Taylor announced the decision to retain the current governance structure, stating that the non-profit will continue to oversee the for-profit operations.
