OpenAI Exploring Deployment of AI on NATO’s Unclassified Networks

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company supported by Microsoft, Amazon, and others, is reportedly considering a contract to deploy its AI systems on NATO’s unclassified networks. This development comes shortly after OpenAI signed a deal to deploy its technology on the Pentagon’s classified network. Initially, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned deployment across all NATO classified networks, but a company spokesperson clarified that the contract opportunity is only for unclassified networks. The 32-member military alliance NATO has not issued a formal response to the news as of now. OpenAI’s Pentagon deal followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s directive to halt work with rival AI company Anthropic, which had raised concerns about its technology being used for mass domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. OpenAI confirmed that its AI systems will not be intentionally used for domestic surveillance of U.S. persons and nationals, and the Pentagon also affirmed that intelligence agencies such as the NSA will not use these AI services. Altman described the Pentagon deal as a complex decision with challenging branding implications and potentially negative short-term public relations impact. This move demonstrates OpenAI’s growing presence in defence-related AI applications while maintaining ethical constraints on usage.
