How AI, Robotics, and Wearables Are Shaping Workplace Safety in Canada

Around 60 per cent of Canadian employees are expected to see their jobs transformed by artificial intelligence (AI), mostly as a complement rather than a replacement. AI technologies—including wearable sensors, drones, and robots—are increasingly used to enhance occupational health and safety, particularly in high-risk sectors such as construction, mining, oil and gas, and heavy manufacturing. Wearable devices can monitor posture, heart rate, movement, noise, and temperature, alerting workers to fatigue, heat stress, toxic exposure, or fall risks. Smart harnesses and gloves can prevent injuries and repetitive strain, while continuous monitoring allows for early ergonomic intervention, extending careers for aging workers. AI-driven drones and robots inspect hazardous or unstable environments such as tunnels, demolition sites, nuclear facilities, and mines, keeping humans at a safe distance. Predictive AI models can also anticipate long-term health risks, such as hearing loss in industrial settings. However, these technologies carry potential risks, including data privacy concerns, worker surveillance, job insecurity, and malfunctions in complex environments. While Canada has led global efforts on ethical, human-centred AI practices, domestic regulatory frameworks are still lacking, leaving gaps in privacy, autonomy, and worker protection. Thoughtful deployment, strong governance, and worker consultation are crucial to ensure AI enhances safety without compromising rights or well-being.
