Perplexity introduces Comet: a new AI-powered browser aimed at challenging Google
Perplexity, an AI-focused startup, has unveiled its first AI-powered web browser, Comet, aiming to rival Google Search. Available initially to subscribers of Perplexity’s Max plan and selected invitees, Comet comes with an AI search engine as the default. This search engine generates summaries of web search results, making it easier for users to digest information. In addition, Perplexity has introduced Comet Assistant, an AI agent that automates routine tasks like managing emails, summarizing calendar events, navigating web pages, and answering questions about the content on any web page. This AI assistant appears in a sidecar window, offering context-sensitive assistance as users browse. While the new browser offers exciting features, Perplexity faces significant competition, particularly from established players like Google and Apple. Comet competes against Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari, but it also enters a crowded space with other AI-driven browsers, such as The Browser Company’s Dia. The success of Comet largely depends on how many Perplexity users adopt it and whether the AI assistant can handle more complex tasks without errors. Despite its potential, the AI’s inability to fully automate complex tasks, such as booking parking, limits Comet’s practical use for some users. Nevertheless, Comet’s ability to streamline web browsing and improve productivity could give it an edge in the browser wars.
