Google Unveils Project Astra as Core Visual AI Behind Gemini Live
During its I/O 2025 keynote, Google emphasized its AI advancements under the Gemini brand, highlighting ‘Project Astra’ as a foundational component in developing visual AI features. Project Astra serves as a research and testing framework for future consumer applications. One of the first practical implementations is Gemini Live’s camera mode, now available on Android and iOS. This feature allows users to interact with their environment through their phone’s camera, receiving contextual responses from Gemini.
The keynote showcased demonstrations of Project Astra’s capabilities. In one, a user asked Astra to locate a bicycle manual, highlight specific repair pages, find a YouTube tutorial for fixing a stripped screw, and even contact a local shop—all through natural conversation. Another video demonstrated Astra helping a visually impaired musician navigate a venue.
Importantly, Astra’s features will expand beyond the Gemini app, integrating into Google Search’s AI Mode. This move aims to make AI-driven visual assistance more accessible to users who prefer not to install standalone apps. As these features evolve, they could become integral to how users interact with technology visually across platforms.
