University of Zurich AI Experiment on Reddit Sparks Ethics and Consent Controversy

Reddit has criticized an experiment conducted by researchers from the University of Zurich, who used undisclosed AI bots to participate in the r/changemyview subreddit to study the influence of artificial intelligence on public opinion. The experiment involved 13 AI-driven accounts posting approximately 1,700 comments over several months without informing users or subreddit moderators. Reddit’s Chief Legal Officer, Ben Lee, publicly denounced the study as ‘improper and highly unethical,’ stating that legal action is being considered against the researchers. The moderators of the subreddit, known for its emphasis on civil discourse and openness to opposing views, were not informed in advance and have filed an ethics complaint with the university. The researchers argued that the covert nature of the experiment was necessary for authenticity, as prior consent would compromise natural interaction. Despite their claim of ethical adherence and approval from the university’s Ethics Committee, the committee had only issued recommendations, not legal approvals. The university has since announced plans for stricter oversight.
