Waymo and Toyota Collaborate to Develop Self-Driving Technology for Personal Cars

Waymo, a self-driving technology company owned by Alphabet, has announced a preliminary partnership with Toyota to integrate autonomous vehicle technology into personally-owned vehicles. The goal of the partnership is to combine Waymo’s advanced autonomous driving systems with Toyota’s automotive engineering to accelerate the development of driver assistance and fully autonomous systems for private vehicles. While the deal is still in early stages, Waymo’s co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana noted that it could also lead to Toyota vehicles being used in Waymo’s existing ride-hailing services.

This collaboration is the latest in a series of automotive partnerships for Waymo, which has previously worked with Jaguar Land Rover, Hyundai, and Geely, among others. The announcement comes as Waymo continues to expand its commercial robotaxi services in U.S. cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Austin, with 250,000 weekly paid rides reported. Meanwhile, other automakers like GM are shifting focus from robotaxis to autonomous personal vehicles following setbacks.

Despite growing interest in personal autonomous vehicles, Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently criticized the robotaxi model for being too costly, and claimed Tesla will begin offering unsupervised autonomous rides in Austin by June 2025. The future of personal autonomous driving remains competitive and uncertain, but collaborations like Waymo and Toyota’s may signal a shift toward consumer ownership of self-driving tech.
