Reddit Implements Human Verification to Combat Bots and Spam

Reddit is introducing a human-verification system for accounts suspected of bot-like behavior while also recognizing useful automated accounts. This measure, which is not applied sitewide, focuses on accounts that demonstrate suspicious activity, such as posting too quickly or engaging in repetitive actions that bots typically do. While Reddit uses AI tools to detect potential bots, it emphasizes that using AI-generated posts is not against its policies, although moderators can set their own rules. To confirm human users, Reddit will use third-party verification methods like Apple’s passkeys, YubiKey, biometric services (Face ID), and in some regions, government-issued IDs for age verification. The company assures that this process will prioritize privacy and anonymity, aiming to validate the person behind the account, not their identity. This approach is being rolled out gradually to address bot traffic and improve user experience without compromising the platform’s anonymous nature. Despite some concerns from users, the system is designed to increase transparency and preserve Reddit’s unique community environment while curbing bot-driven content.
