Google Moves Tensor G5 Production to TSMC, Leaving Samsung Behind
Google has officially transitioned the manufacturing of its upcoming Pixel 10’s Tensor G5 chip from Samsung to TSMC, marking a significant strategic shift. This move reportedly surprised Samsung, which had been the exclusive foundry for Tensor chips since their inception. The decision is part of Google’s long-term plan to create a fully custom chip, improving performance and addressing past issues with thermal efficiency and power consumption.
An internal investigation within Samsung, referred to as “the Google incident,” is now underway to understand the loss. Industry insiders suggest the switch highlights systemic problems within Samsung Foundry, including poor yield rates and limited semiconductor design assets. Google was reportedly dissatisfied with Samsung’s 3nm process yield, which sits at around 50%, in stark contrast to TSMC’s 90%.
Although the Tensor G5 chip will now be made by TSMC, the Pixel 10 is still expected to feature a Samsung Exynos modem. This decision aligns Google with leading chipmakers like Apple and Qualcomm, who also rely on TSMC’s more advanced and reliable production capabilities. The report reinforces Google’s focus on performance and AI improvements over raw benchmarks, especially after prior customer concerns over overheating issues in earlier Pixel devices.
