Siyifunile Secondary launches robotics lab to boost digital skills

Learners at Siyifunile Secondary School in Dullstroom now have access to a new robotics laboratory, marking a significant step in bridging the digital divide for rural students. Established through a partnership between the Shoprite Foundation and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), the lab introduces learners to coding, robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI), offering hands-on experience and structured learning from Grade 8 through matric. Previously, exposure to robotics programmes in rural communities was limited, making this facility a symbol of opportunity and progress. The initiative is designed to integrate technology education into the school curriculum, with Grades 8 and 9 receiving formal coding and robotics lessons, while Grades 10 to 12 participate in after-school programmes focusing on AI and career readiness. School principal Lynette Mongwe highlighted the resilience of learners, many of whom face significant socio-economic challenges, including orphanhood and community issues such as substance abuse. Despite these obstacles, learners have shown keen interest and determination to engage with technology. Representatives from the foundation and DBSA emphasised that the project aims to create a sustainable ecosystem, combining infrastructure, digital skills development, and community empowerment. Partners including Sifiso EdTech and Social Coding South Africa will ensure curriculum alignment, educator training, and practical innovation projects. The lab aims to equip learners with problem-solving skills, digital literacy, and career pathways in technology, helping rural students keep pace with modern digital education trends.
