Samsung Reacts to Google’s Switch to TSMC Foundries Amid Internal Challenges

A recent report revealed that Samsung was caught off guard by Google’s decision to move its Pixel 10 series chip production from Samsung to TSMC foundries. This shift, internally dubbed ‘the Google incident,’ highlights deeper issues within Samsung’s corporate culture and semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. Google has faced criticism for its Tensor chips, especially when compared to competitors using Qualcomm processors, which have been produced by TSMC for years. Samsung’s own foundries have struggled with efficiency and yields, causing both Google and Qualcomm to rely increasingly on TSMC’s proven 4nm fabrication process. Notably, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip experienced overheating problems when made by Samsung, but performed better after switching to TSMC. Samsung’s inconsistent support for its Exynos chips and the company’s slow innovation in other product areas, such as foldables, further illustrate internal struggles. Although Samsung still produces some impressive hardware, the surprise over Google’s foundry change indicates a need for Samsung leadership to reassess their strategy and address ongoing challenges more proactively.
