Saudi Arabia’s PIF Acquires Niantic’s Gaming Division for $3.5 Billion
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has acquired the gaming division of Niantic, the developer behind Pokémon Go, for $3.5 billion. Pokémon Go, a mobile game utilizing augmented reality, remains one of the highest-grossing games globally with 30 million monthly players nearly a decade after its launch. The acquisition includes other Niantic titles like Monster Hunter Now and Pikmin Bloom, along with its workforce, which will integrate into Scopely Inc., a company previously acquired by PIF subsidiary Savvy Games Group for $4.9 billion in 2023. Scopely is known for its successful mobile games, including Monopoly Go, which has generated over $3 billion in revenue. This move aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to become a global hub for gaming and esports, supported by significant investments through initiatives like Vision 2030. PIF already holds stakes in major gaming companies such as Nintendo and Electronic Arts and has hosted major esports events, including the Esports World Cup and the upcoming Olympic Esports Games in Riyadh. While the investment underscores Saudi Arabia’s ambitions in gaming and sports, it also raises concerns due to allegations of human rights violations linked to the country’s leadership.
