AI-Powered News Aggregator Smashing Shuts Down Due to Lack of Scalability

Smashing, an AI-powered reading curation app founded by Goodreads creator Otis Chandler, is shutting down less than a year after its launch in June 2024. The app aimed to bring together news articles, blog posts, podcasts, and social media content into a single, customizable feed. Users could follow topics of interest, submit and vote on content, and benefit from AI-generated summaries and an integrated Q&A bot. Despite a promising start and $3.4 million in funding from notable investors including True Ventures and Advancit Capital, the app failed to achieve the rapid user growth necessary to sustain the business. The company, which had a team of seven employees, communicated the shutdown in an email to its users, citing the inability to scale as the primary reason. Smashing’s closure mirrors a similar fate faced by Artifact, an AI news app launched by Instagram’s co-founders, which was discontinued and later sold to Yahoo. Nonetheless, the space remains competitive, with alternatives like Bulletin, Particle, Feeeed, Tapestry, and Reeder still active in developing personalized news experiences. Smashing’s short-lived journey highlights the ongoing challenge of scaling content aggregation platforms in a crowded market dominated by evolving user expectations and technological demands.
