Sony’s RX1R III: A Compact Camera with Significant Upgrades, but No Tilting Screen

Sony has made a notable update to its RX1R III full-frame compact camera by adding several new features while maintaining the camera’s compact size. Despite increasing the camera’s dimensions slightly by just 2.5mm in height and 15.5mm in depth, Sony removed the tiltable screen to preserve the form factor of the previous model. The new version boasts an improved high-resolution sensor from the A7R V, a new autofocus tracking system, longer-lasting battery, and an electronic viewfinder. In order to make the design sleeker, Sony integrated the top dials and hot shoe into the camera body. However, the compact design means that the RX1R III lacks lens or sensor-based image stabilization, which may disappoint users who were hoping for enhanced stabilization in this high-end camera. Interestingly, Leica responded to customer demand by including a tilt screen in their Q3 model despite the design compromises. In contrast, Sony has stuck with its compact design philosophy, even though it could have addressed some of the features that users have been asking for in a more versatile compact camera.
