Uber Partners with Lucid and Nuro to Launch 20,000 Robotaxis by 2032

Uber has announced a partnership with electric vehicle maker Lucid Group and autonomous driving company Nuro to deploy 20,000 robotaxis over the next six years. The project aims to integrate Nuro’s autonomous driving technology into Lucid Gravity SUVs, which will be part of Uber’s ride-sharing network. The initial rollout of these vehicles is expected to begin in late 2026 in a major U.S. city, with Uber making multi-hundred-million dollar investments to support the manufacturing upgrades at Lucid’s assembly line. Uber will invest $300 million into Lucid to facilitate the integration of Nuro’s hardware into the vehicles. This move is part of Uber’s broader strategy to revolutionize urban transport with self-driving cars, promising to reduce labor costs and offer a more efficient, automated alternative to traditional ride-sharing. However, concerns have been raised about the impact on gig workers who may lose their jobs as a result of the automation. While some point out that traffic deaths could be reduced with autonomous vehicles, others question who will be held responsible in case of accidents involving robotaxis.
