Stellantis Discontinues Ram 1500 REV Due to Slowing Demand for Electric Trucks

Stellantis has announced the cancellation of its electric Ram 1500 REV truck due to slowing sales in the heavy-duty electric truck segment. Despite this, the company is preserving the ‘REV’ nameplate, which will now be applied to the range-extended Ramcharger truck. The revamped Ram 1500 REV is expected to set a new benchmark in the half-ton truck market with exceptional range, towing, and payload performance. This shift follows a series of delays, including the postponement of the truck’s original launch from 2024 to 2026. Stellantis’ decision to prioritize its hybrid Ramcharger model, which also faced delays, reflects the shifting dynamics in the electric vehicle (EV) market, particularly in the truck sector. As the federal government phases out tax credits for electric vehicles, automakers are increasingly cautious about EV production, particularly for larger trucks, which require costly, larger batteries. The decline in sales of electric trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, and Tesla Cybertruck has prompted a rethinking of production strategies. With trucks losing range when towing, the market for electric trucks that can perform traditional heavy-duty tasks remains challenging. This move is part of Stellantis’ broader strategic re-evaluation following the resignation of CEO Carlos Tavares amidst declining sales.
