Tanzania plans digital ticketing for commuter buses to modernize transport

Dar es Salaam — The Land Transport Regulatory Authority (Latra) in Tanzania is planning to introduce electronic ticketing for daladala buses to improve fare collection and modernize urban transport. Right now, passengers pay cash to conductors, which sometimes leads to fare disputes or lost revenue for operators. The proposed system will allow passengers to pay through digital platforms, including mobile phones, while still keeping a cash option for convenience. Latra has already piloted electronic ticketing successfully in upcountry buses, with ten companies approved to issue digital tickets. Authorities now want to extend this system to city transport, starting with Mwanza as an early adopter because local transport unions there have shown strong support. The plan also looks at a future Integrated Transport System, which would allow passengers to use a rechargeable transport card across buses, BRT services, and upcoming commuter trains, making city travel smoother and more transparent. Commuters say digital ticketing will reduce arguments over fares and make costs clearer. Experts highlight the need for public education and coordination with mobile network operators to ensure smooth adoption. Bus owners are willing to cooperate, provided the system is practical and affordable. Overall, this move aims to strengthen revenue collection, enhance passenger convenience, and modernize urban transport in Tanzania.
