Instagram to discontinue end-to-end encryption for messages from May 8, 2026

Meta has officially announced that Instagram will cease supporting end-to-end (E2E) encrypted messaging from 8 May 2026. Users who rely on this feature for secure communications will need to consider alternative platforms or take steps to download and save their chat history before the update. The company added a notice on its website providing clear instructions for downloading affected messages and media. End-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and receiver can read messages, lowering the risk of external interception. While WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, continues to offer E2E encryption, other popular secure messaging services include Signal and Telegram. The decision to phase out Instagram’s E2E messaging reportedly stems from low user demand, though regulators worldwide have been increasingly scrutinising encrypted messaging due to concerns over its potential misuse for illegal activity. Users are advised to update their Instagram app if they are on older versions to access download options for their chats. This change reflects the ongoing balancing act between user privacy and regulatory oversight in social media platforms.
