Tanzania’s Digital Growth: Opportunities and Cyber Risks
Tanzania is going through big changes with technology, and digital tools are now changing how people live, work, and trade. Farmers can check market prices online before selling, small business owners get instant payments through mobile money, and boda boda riders arrange customers via WhatsApp. Platforms like M-Pesa, Airtel Money, and Mixx by Yas have brought more people into the financial system, while government services and digital ID initiatives are helping citizens access banking, telecoms, and public services. But this digital growth comes with risks. Cybercrime is rising fast, with threats like SIM swap fraud and AI-generated deepfake scams. Criminals can take over phone numbers to steal money or impersonate people using cloned voices. Phishing attacks that trick users into giving personal information are also more sophisticated. Part of the problem is that cybersecurity awareness has not grown as fast as digital adoption. Retail agents, customer service channels, and third-party systems often become weak points. To protect the digital future, citizens should use strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and check urgent requests carefully. Businesses must strengthen security systems and adopt Zero-Trust approaches, while the government should support a strong CERT and enforce regulations consistently. If all these groups act together, Tanzania can enjoy a secure, inclusive, and innovative digital economy while avoiding major cyber risks.
