Tesla’s Struggles in India: Delayed Launch and Disillusioned Early Backers
Tesla’s long-awaited launch in India has been met with disappointment from its earliest supporters. Despite opening its first showroom in Mumbai, many of the loyalists who pre-booked the Model 3 as far back as 2016 have expressed their frustration. Among them is Vishal Gondal, a fitness-tech entrepreneur, who waited years for Tesla’s debut but felt ‘underwhelmed’ by the showroom and the overall experience. A key grievance has been the years-long delay and the difficulties these early backers faced in securing refunds for their initial reservation fees. Many are now skeptical of purchasing a Tesla, with some even criticizing the lack of communication and recognition from the company. The delay, combined with the absence of a local Supercharger network and after-sales services, has left these early supporters disillusioned. Furthermore, Musk’s controversial political involvement has tarnished Tesla’s image in India, reducing its appeal. The luxury electric vehicle market in India remains small, and Tesla’s pricing strategy, importing vehicles from China instead of local production, has made the Model Y a premium-priced product, further limiting its market. As the Indian EV market matures with strong local competition, Tesla’s early advantages appear to be slipping away.
