Texas Instruments to Invest $60 Billion in US Semiconductor Manufacturing
Texas Instruments (TI), a leading semiconductor manufacturer, has announced plans to invest over $60 billion in the United States. This historic move will include the construction and expansion of seven new chip-making facilities in Texas and Utah. The investment aims to create 60,000 jobs, although TI has not yet provided a detailed timeline. The company, based in Dallas, described the initiative as the largest investment in foundational semiconductor manufacturing in US history. The announcement comes amidst growing pressure from former President Donald Trump for major technology firms to ramp up manufacturing within the country. The investment follows similar moves by other companies, such as Micron, which announced a $200 billion plan to boost US semiconductor production. TI’s commitment is seen as a response to Trump’s efforts to increase domestic semiconductor production, including threats to cancel the $52.7 billion CHIPS and Science Act, which was introduced under the Biden administration. TI’s chips, essential for various devices including smartphones and cars, face increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers. Among its clients are tech giants like Apple, SpaceX, and Ford.
