Paralyzed Man Controls Computer with Neuralink Brain Implant
Noland Arbaugh, a 30-year-old who was paralyzed from the shoulders down after a 2016 diving accident, became the first person to receive a brain implant from Neuralink, the neurotechnology company founded by Elon Musk. The chip, known as a brain-computer interface (BCI), allows him to control a computer using only his thoughts by detecting electrical impulses associated with movement. While similar technology has been developed by other companies, Neuralink’s involvement has attracted significant attention due to Musk’s influence.
Arbaugh has found the implant life-changing, regaining some independence and even playing video games again. However, he acknowledges the risks and challenges of the technology, including privacy concerns and potential device malfunctions. At one point, he temporarily lost control of his computer when the implant partially disconnected but was later repaired through software updates.
Neuralink is part of a growing field of BCI research, with competitors like Synchron developing less invasive alternatives. Despite concerns over data privacy and long-term feasibility, Arbaugh remains optimistic about the future of brain implants, hoping they could eventually control wheelchairs or robotic assistants. His case is an example of both the potential and challenges of merging human cognition with digital technology.
