Threads Introduces Direct Messaging Feature as It Establishes Itself as a Separate Platform from Instagram
Threads, the Meta-owned app, is rolling out its most-requested feature yet: direct messages (DMs). Starting Tuesday, users will be able to message others without leaving the app, marking a significant step towards distancing the platform from Instagram. The DMs will initially offer one-on-one messaging, emoji reactions, spam reporting, and muting options. While group chats and more advanced controls will be added in future updates, users currently can’t block individuals from messaging them unless they block them entirely on Threads, which also affects Instagram. Notably, the DMs feature will be available to users 18 and over in most markets, with some exclusions. This update helps Threads better compete with text-first platforms like X and Bluesky, where users can communicate directly or in groups. However, unlike X, Threads will not encrypt DMs, as Meta sees the feature as more about fostering public conversations rather than privacy. Threads aims to create a unique space for perspectives, distinct from Instagram, which is centered around creativity. With 350 million monthly active users, Threads is testing ways for users to sign up without an Instagram account, including through Facebook login. The platform’s community-building efforts include tagging, topic feeds, and highlighting trending conversations. Meta has confirmed it will focus on ads for monetization, with no immediate plans for further AI integration.
