UK Government Launches Free AI Training to Upskill Workforce

The UK government has launched free artificial intelligence training for adults across the country, aiming to prepare the workforce for rapid technological changes. The upgraded AI Skills Hub offers short, practical courses on tasks like drafting text, creating content, and automating administrative work, with some courses taking less than 20 minutes. This initiative is a collaboration between the government and major tech companies such as Google, Microsoft, and IBM, and has already delivered over one million courses since last summer. Small business owners have reported significant benefits, including improved efficiency and time savings. Despite this, only 21% of UK workers feel confident using AI, and just one in six businesses currently use the technology. The government hopes that broader adoption could generate up to £140bn annually in economic growth while freeing workers from routine tasks and creating higher-skilled roles. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall highlighted a target of upskilling 10 million workers in AI skills by 2030 and stressed the importance of ensuring AI supports employees rather than replaces them. The success of the program depends on whether businesses and individuals commit to training and adopting AI tools.
