Volkswagen Launches ID Buzz AD, Its Level 4 Autonomous Electric Van for Commercial Use
Volkswagen has officially unveiled the ID Buzz AD, an autonomous version of its electric ID Buzz van, targeted at commercial fleet operators rather than individual consumers. The vehicle is equipped with an extensive array of sensors, including 13 cameras, 9 LiDARs, and 5 radars, and meets SAE International’s Level 4 autonomous driving standards—allowing it to operate without a driver within designated areas.
Designed for urban mobility services, the ID Buzz AD features a longer wheelbase and taller roof to accommodate its autonomous technology. It will be produced at scale in Volkswagen’s Hannover factory, which aims to manufacture over 10,000 units. The first deployment is already confirmed: the German city of Hamburg will incorporate the robotaxis into its public transport system. Volkswagen’s mobility subsidiary, MOIA, will oversee operations and further deployment.
The vehicle includes comprehensive fleet support tools such as self-driving software, fleet management systems, and operator training. Uber is also planning to integrate the ID Buzz AD into its U.S. operations, starting with Los Angeles in 2026.
Although pricing hasn’t been finalized, Volkswagen anticipates a low six-figure cost per unit in euros. Officials suggest public subsidies may be necessary to support wide adoption. VW sees autonomous mobility as a long-term strategic investment that could eventually surpass the profitability of traditional automotive sales.
