Andrew Maynard, a professor specializing in emerging technologies at Arizona State University, described the incident as a rare ‘edge case’—an unusual situation where the vehicle’s artificial intelligence made a non-human-like decision. He explained that despite frequent software updates and the 29 cameras used in Waymo’s cars, unforeseen conditions, such as recent construction and new rail lines in the area, can confuse navigation systems. Maynard stressed that such events, while alarming, are part of the learning curve for autonomous vehicle technology. He added that overall, self-driving cars tend to be safer than human drivers because they lack distractions. Valley Metro, which operates the light rail network, confirmed that staff were notified immediately, and train operations were adjusted to minimize delays. The situation was resolved within 15 minutes without injury or damage. The event highlights both the promise and the growing pains of integrating autonomous systems into complex urban environments.
