WhatsApp introduces ads in the Updates tab, breaking its long-standing promise

WhatsApp has officially rolled out ads in its Updates tab, marking a significant shift from its previous stance of avoiding advertisements. Meta, which acquired WhatsApp in 2014, is pushing to monetize the platform beyond its business tools, integrating sponsored content in the same space where users see updates from friends and family. Despite reassurances that no personal data such as messages, calls, or group chats will be used for targeting ads, the move breaks the ‘no ads’ ethos that WhatsApp co-founders, Brian Acton and Jan Koum, set for the platform. This decision has sparked backlash from users, some of whom are threatening to leave the app for alternatives like Signal or Telegram. Despite the criticism, Meta’s vast user base, particularly in emerging markets, may allow the platform to retain its users as it integrates further into Meta’s advertising-driven model. The question remains whether this shift will affect WhatsApp’s reputation as a privacy-first platform.
