Microsoft to Phase Out Passwords in Authenticator App by August 2025
Microsoft has announced that it will begin removing stored passwords from its Authenticator app starting in June 2025, urging users to transition to passkeys—a more secure and phishing-resistant authentication method. By August 2025, stored passwords will no longer be accessible through Authenticator, and users will not be able to use autofill starting in July. Instead, Microsoft encourages users to sync their saved passwords and addresses with Microsoft Edge or, ideally, move entirely to passkeys. This shift aligns with broader industry trends, as Google is also pushing users to abandon traditional passwords due to their vulnerability to breaches and phishing attacks. Microsoft warns that cybercriminals are ramping up attacks while passwords are still in use. Supporting this urgency, a recent report from Cybernews has revealed a massive breach exposing 16 billion records from various platforms, underscoring the risks tied to conventional credentials. While some experts argue this breach aggregates existing leaks rather than introducing new ones, the incident emphasizes the urgency of upgrading security practices. Microsoft’s recommendation is clear: adopt passkeys now to enhance security and stay ahead of evolving cyber threats.
