xAI introduces memory functionality to Grok for personalized chatbot responses

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has launched a new memory feature for its Grok chatbot in an effort to compete with leading AI systems like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Announced on April 16, 2025, this update enables Grok to remember user preferences and past interactions, allowing for more tailored and relevant responses. This functionality makes Grok more useful over time as it ‘learns’ from the user’s behavior and inquiries.

Unlike earlier versions, Grok’s memory will store and utilize information from prior conversations to enhance future replies, particularly for tasks like giving recommendations or advice. Users will have transparency over what Grok remembers, with options to review, delete, or disable specific memories via the settings. The memory can also be entirely turned off in the Data Controls menu.

Currently in beta, the feature is available on Grok.com and through Grok’s iOS and Android apps, although it is not yet accessible to users in the EU or the UK due to regional regulations. xAI is also working on integrating this memory capability into Grok’s experience on X (formerly Twitter).

This move brings Grok closer in functionality to competitors who already offer persistent memory features, signaling xAI’s intent to keep pace in the rapidly evolving chatbot landscape.
