Empowering Tanzanian Youth Through Digital Technology
Digital technologies are shaping how young people in Tanzania and worldwide learn, interact, and spend their free time. Tablets, smartphones, and social media have become everyday tools for youths, with over 70 per cent of 15–24-year-olds being online. But big challenges exist: millions of young people, especially in Africa, are not connected, limiting their access to education, jobs, and critical information. Alongside opportunities, digital technology brings risks, including cyberbullying, online sexual exploitation, and exposure to harmful content. Excessive screen time can also affect physical and mental health. Nevertheless, moderate digital engagement can improve social relationships and mental wellbeing. Experts highlight that society should not only prepare youths to cope with technology but also equip them to thrive. Providing skills, access, and support systems can help young people unlock their potential and contribute to innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable growth for the next generation.
