Intel’s IPU 7.5 for Panther Lake Laptops Requires Closed-Source Linux Libraries
At Intel’s Tech Tour in Arizona, the company showcased its next-generation Image Processing Unit (IPU) 7.5, designed for upcoming Panther Lake laptops. The IPU 7.5 aims to enhance image processing capabilities, but like its predecessors (IPU 6 and 7), it relies on closed-source user-space libraries for full functionality. This dependency limits open-source Linux support, requiring either proprietary software or libcamera’s software-based image signal processing (Soft ISP), which uses more CPU resources and sacrifices some hardware benefits. While Intel emphasized Linux support as a priority for OEMs/ODMs, the closed-source requirement remains a challenge for Linux users. The Linux 6.17 kernel introduced the IPU 7 video driver, supporting Lunar Lake and likely Panther Lake’s IPU 7.5, with firmware and library binaries available on GitHub. However, a fully open-source stack is still absent, unlike AMD’s approach, which offers open-source ISP support (though its ISP4 driver awaits mainlining). Intel also clarified that laptop vendors can opt for cheaper USB-based web cameras instead of the IPU, and lower-cost eUSB2V2 web cameras are not expected in the next generation. The IPU 7.5 is set to debut with Panther Lake laptops in 2026, but open-source limitations may hinder its adoption among Linux enthusiasts.
