Microsoft Investigates and Resolves Microsoft 365 Authentication Problems Due to Infrastructure Limits
Microsoft has acknowledged and addressed a significant authentication issue affecting Microsoft 365 users globally, particularly in EMEA and APAC regions. The problem, which began receiving customer reports around April 18, 2025, involved errors with multi-factor authentication (MFA), especially during registration and self-service password resets. Affected users encountered messages such as ‘no supported methods are currently enabled for your account’ and were unable to proceed with MFA setup. Administrators also faced challenges adding MFA methods for some users. Microsoft traced the issue to a recent configuration change aimed at enhancing MFA functionality. However, this change inadvertently affected the infrastructure responsible for processing authentication-related requests, which failed to perform within expected thresholds. In response, Microsoft engineers implemented temporary configuration changes to stabilize the system while developing a permanent fix. By June 13 at 10:31 EDT, the issue was officially mitigated. This incident follows several recent Microsoft 365 disruptions, including outages in January and May, caused by resource overloads and licensing errors. Affected services included NHSmail in the UK, further highlighting the global scope and impact of the failure. Microsoft continues to monitor performance as part of its long-term remediation efforts.
