Protecting Yourself from Counterfeit Scams on Online Resale Platforms
Online resale platforms like Vinted, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace have become popular for finding deals, but they also attract scammers selling counterfeit goods. A case highlighted involves Maheen, who purchased a Dyson Airwrap for £260 on Vinted, significantly below its retail price of £400-£480. After minimal use, the device began smoking and was confirmed counterfeit by Dyson, posing safety risks. Research from Experian reveals that 37% of Britons have been scammed on such platforms, with younger generations, particularly Gen Z (58%), being most vulnerable. Common scams include receiving fake products (34%), off-platform payment requests (31%), and non-delivery of items (22%). To avoid these risks, buyers should scrutinize seller profiles, read reviews, request product videos, and use secure payment methods within the platform. Maheen struggled to get a refund due to Vinted’s two-day buyer protection window but succeeded with external assistance. If scammed, reporting to the platform, requesting chargebacks for debit card payments, or pursuing Section 75 claims for credit card purchases over £100 are options. New fraud refund protections may also apply for bank transfers, though recovery is more complex.
